Blast hits Aden airport upon government arrival

Cairo: A powerful explosion hit Yemen’s Aden airport on Wednesday following the arrival of a new government from Saudi Arabia, local media reported.

Dozens of people were killed or injured as a result of the explosion that rocked the airport, online newspaper Aden Al Ghad reported.

The portal showed images of apparently dead bodies lying on the ground amid damage, saying they were the victims of the blast.

The members of the government were transferred for safety to the Al Maasheeq palace in Aden following the explosion, it added.

The new Yemeni government was formed earlier this month as part of a Saudi-brokered pact between the internationally recognised authority and the Southern Transitional Council (STC).

Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi had decreed the formation of the 24-member government, led by previous prime minister Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed.
